Won Most Fun and Best Overall at Divejam 2! Kingfish is a game about fishing! But also about breathing! And maybe a little bit about shooting? In this game you are a scuba spear fisher. You need to manage your oxygen levels by MANUALLY breathing (hold and release space bar). The speed at which you breathe dictates the speed of the game, so slow down to catch some valuable fish or speed up to go by the small frys! What I did: Gameplay Design. I wanted to make a game where the speed of your breathing directly impacts the tempo of the game. I also wanted to make a control system inspired by QWOP that is satisfying once you understand the rhythm Programming. I wanted to make a smooth, polished game, which is something that rarely comes out of jams. I implemented:
I used a LOT of Coroutines (like Unreal Timelines) for tweening things like screen shake, speed bursts, oxygen depletion etc., so getting practice in for that was really nice. I also used a lot Animation Curves for those coroutines which made the game feel a lot more polished. I had never used Unity's animation editor, so I made a day of it and went wild with UI animations like the control screen and spear return animations.
